Tybee Island Lighthouse, Georgia c. 1733 – image: 6.5 x 11.5 |
|
Shortly after General James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733, he ordered the construction of a tall wooden tower on Tybee Island to guide ships into the Savannah River. The tower has been rebuilt many times, having been destroyed by storms and once burned down by the retreating Confederate troops in 1861. Today the 154-foot octagonal structure still serves us with its light ranging some twenty miles.
