Hunting Island Lighthouse, South Carolina c. 1859 – image: 9 x 18 |
|
Shortly before the Civil War, the Lighthouse Board decided it needed a lighthouse halfway between Charleston and Savannah. When erosion threatened the tower in 1885 the cast-iron tower was taken apart and reassembled further inland. Although no longer in operation, the Hunting Island Lighthouse is situated on a lovely wooded state park in Beaufort county, South Carolina. Beaufort is the home county of famed southern author Pat Conroy.
